Fotox
Fotox is a free open-source Linux program for improving image files made with a digital camera.
Most capabilities are shown below, and more examples can be seen at fotox gallery.
The GUI is available in English, German, and Spanish.

This is the latest version, installed from source using a simple procedure.
For Ubuntu (Gutsy) package, go to this link
For OpenSuse package, go to this link and search for "fotox"
These packages are created by volunteers working for their respective Linux distros.
Depending on when they were built, they may not have every capability described below.
Click on any of the following images to see a bigger image.

View directory of images as pages of thumbnails.
Click thumbnail to get full size image to view or edit.
Change brightness, contrast, color.

Change brightness distribution.
Darken bright areas and lighten dark areas.
The airplane shadows have been lightened
without affecting the terraine shadows.
The bird on the right has been color-enhanced
and the one of the left has not been changed.
The building on the right has been lightened up.
Tune - defog
The Shanghai haze has been cleared.
HDR (high dynamic range) photography
The lower image is a composite of the upper two.
Brighter areas were taken mostly from the darker image,
and darker areas mostly from the brighter image.
Color and contrast were also adjusted afterwards.

Panorama
Combine images to make ultra-wide images.
Image alignment is simple.

Unbend
Sometimes panorama images need to be straightened.

Unbend is also useful to fix perspective problems.
Red Eye
Select a red eye and fix it.
Rotate
Level a tilted image or turn in 90 degree steps.
left - original sharp image
middle - blurred version of left image
right - sharpened middle image
Noise reduction (v.38)
Reduce noise in photos taken under low light conditions.
Reduce color depth (v.38)
Reduce color depth (number of colors).
Stretch (v.38)
Select an image area, pull in different directions
(like stretching a rubber image)
